Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and work

Montana State University Billings (MSUB) Work Incentives Planning and Assistance Program (WIPA) receives funding from Social Security through a cooperative agreement. They provide benefits counseling to Social Security Disability beneficiaries who have a job offer pending working, veterans and transition age youth. The goal of the WIPA program is to assist Social Security beneficiaries with disabilities make informed choices about work and to support working beneficiaries by helping them make a successful transition to self-sufficiency. MSUB WIPA services are provided statewide in Montana, Idaho, North Dakota and South Dakota.

By the end of this session, we hope that you have gained a general understanding of:

  1. The basic effect of earned income (paycheck) on SSI cash payments;
  2. Four SSI work incentives and how they can be applied to reduce countable earned income; and
  3. The benefits of 1619(b) extended Medicaid.
