Supporting Self-Determination in Persons with Disabilities

Have you wondered how to best support people with disabilities in achieving self-determination? Human beings like having the ability to have choice in their lives, and this includes persons with disabilities. This workshop session will introduce learners to the principles and philosophies of self-determination theory and why they are important. Case studies and videos will feature individuals with disabilities navigating the world of self-determination successfully. Strategies and recommendations will be offered for individuals, caregivers, and professionals to implement that honor the self-determination within the disability community.

1. Define self-determination theory and describe three key tenets

2. Explain the value of self-determination within the disability community

3. Examine case examples of problematic and successful self-determination situations

4. Implement ethical practices that honor self-determination of persons with disabilities
