Hope as a Skill: Understanding Suicide in America

This keynote will discuss hope as a core emotional skill, and the role it plays in the escalating suicide problem in American.  In particular, identifiable elements of hope will be reviewed, including persistent barriers to progress including stigma and the public narrative.  Essential elements of understanding risk will be identified, including motivation to live and die, along with a conceptual model for understanding suicide intent. Finally, a simple approach to facilitating the development of hope will be reviewed.
