Sexual Health and People With IDD: Why We Should Be Talking About This

Sexual health is an important topic for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Unfortunately, conversations related to sexual health are often not fully addressed or are pushed aside because fear, lack of comfort with the topic, or lack of information. This interactive presentation will explore the need to promote the development of healthy relationships and sexual health for individuals with IDD. Presenters will encourage participation through discussion questions, a small group case study example, and an introduction to existing sexual health resources and programs with audience members.

Educational Outcomes:

  • Participants will be able to discuss the importance of sexual health for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Participants will be able to identify strategies on how to include healthy relationships and sexuality into everyday service delivery and supports.
  • Participants will be able to describe resources used teach sexual health and social skills related to developing relationships.
