More than Carrots and Sticks: Using Differential Reinforcement Effectively and Avoiding Common Pitfalls

This presentation supplies attendees with a practical and engaging introduction to differential reinforcement and why reinforcement-based strategies are often more effective than punishment-based approaches when supporting individuals with developmental disabilities. Participants will learn how reinforcement can be used proactively to increase appropriate, functional, and socially meaningful behaviors while reducing challenging behaviors in home and community settings. We will explore the different types of differential reinforcement (DRA, DRO, DRI, and DRL), how to identify meaningful replacement behaviors, and why reinforcement creates stronger, longer-lasting behavior change than positive or negative punishment procedures. The presentation will also explore extinction, a commonly misused and applied procedure that has important ethical considerations. Real-life examples and case scenarios will help participants apply these strategies consistently, compassionately, and effectively.
