August 1, 2025    1:30PM  -  3PM

Family conflict can come in many forms; high tension divorces, custody battles, opposing caregiving philosophies, covert abuses of power blocking intervention, parent alienation attempts and relational manipulation, just to name a few. When hostility within families runs high, the risk for adverse outcomes is evident, yet many professionals find themselves at a loss for how to navigate their role in a sea of turmoil. Join us as we discuss a professional decision-making framework for assessing cases of high conflict, exploring strategies for combating these issues using both individual and family modalities, and developing interventions appropriate to our unique roles.

Learning Objectives:

  • Adopt a clear understanding of the varying levels of conflict within families.
  • Consider the potential outcomes of intervention in relation to the severity of presenting conflict.
  • Recognize professional considerations and boundary issues unique to cases of extreme conflict, including parental alienation.
  • Identify circumstances where conflict is most likely to lead to significant emotional damage including parental alienation and/or estrangement.
  • Develop appropriate and effective techniques for aiding in relationship repair amidst active strain, as well as methods for initiating reunification after estrangement.
