Fading Strategies: The Art of Getting Out of the Way
Often we are the thing that is holding back our intervention plans! In an attempt to be “working on the behavior,” we don’t always allow our client to struggle in the learning, practice the behavior, and achieve new levels of independence.
We will take a deep dive into how we can recognize opportunities to step back and let learning happen doing our intervention. In doing so, we will learn and practice 4 “P’s” of fading:
- Prompts- How we speak, gesture, or help initiate the behavior
- Pause- How much time we allow before intervention
- Proximity- How close we are to the client
- Praise- How we reinforce the behavior
As we take opportunities to allow for independence, we are letting the real learning happen. Because sometimes the best teaching we can do, is remaining quiet!
